General Description:

Smilagenin, identified by CAS number 126-18-1, is a notable compound with significant therapeutic applications. Smilagenin is a novel non-peptide, orally bioavailable neurotrophic factor inducer that readily reverses free radical neurotoxicity produced by 1-ethyl-4- phenylpyridium (MPP+) in dopaminergic neurones and reverses the decrease of neuronal growth factors and dopamine receptors in the brain. Pre-clinical work with smilagenin showed it to be neuroprotective against betya-amyloid and glutamate damage which contributes to Alzheimer's disease and reverses the changes in the area of the brain involved in Parkinson’s disease. P58 is a protein synthesis stimulant acts by restoring levels of proteins that are altered in the ageing brain, reversing the loss of nerve receptors in the ageing brain and potentially allowing for the regrowth of neural connections. P58 therefore provides a totally novel mode of action with potential importance for diseases associated with ageing of the brain. P58 is one of a family of phytochemicals isolated from traditional treatments for the elderly that have previously been shown to offer significant benefit in the treatment of senile dementia.

Indications:

This drug is primarily indicated for: Investigated for use/treatment in alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Its use in specific medical scenarios underscores its importance in the therapeutic landscape.

Pharmacodynamics:

Smilagenin exerts its therapeutic effects through: Smilagenin is a novel non-peptide, orally bioavailable neurotrophic factor inducer that readily reverses free radical neurotoxicity produced by 1-ethyl-4- phenylpyridium (MPP+) in dopaminergic neurones and reverses the decrease of neuronal growth factors and dopamine receptors in the brain. The drug's ability to modulate various physiological processes underscores its efficacy in treating specific conditions.

Mechanism of Action:

Smilagenin functions by: Smilagenin is a novel non-peptide, orally bioavailable neurotrophic factor inducer that readily reverses free radical neurotoxicity produced by 1-ethyl-4- phenylpyridium (MPP+) in dopaminergic neurones and reverses the decrease of neuronal growth factors and dopamine receptors in the brain. This mechanism highlights the drug's role in inhibiting or promoting specific biological pathways, contributing to its therapeutic effects.

These classifications highlight the drug's diverse therapeutic applications and its importance in treating various conditions.

Smilagenin is a type of Dental and Oral Agents

Dental and oral agents belong to the pharmaceutical API category, playing a crucial role in oral health care. These agents are specifically designed to address various dental and oral conditions, ranging from tooth decay and gum diseases to oral infections and inflammation.

One of the primary types of dental and oral agents is antimicrobial APIs. These active pharmaceutical ingredients are known for their ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in the oral cavity, helping to prevent and treat infections. Common antimicrobial APIs used in dental and oral care include chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, and triclosan.

Another important category is analgesic APIs, which provide pain relief in dental and oral procedures. These agents work by blocking pain signals and reducing inflammation. Popular analgesic APIs in dental care include lidocaine, benzocaine, and ibuprofen.

Fluoride APIs are widely used in dental products to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. These APIs aid in remineralization, making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugary foods.

Furthermore, there are APIs specifically formulated for treating specific oral conditions such as dry mouth or halitosis. These agents help restore moisture in the mouth and neutralize odor-causing compounds.

Dental and oral agents are typically formulated into various dosage forms, including mouthwashes, toothpaste, gels, and oral sprays. These formulations ensure convenient and effective delivery of the APIs to the affected areas in the oral cavity.

In summary, dental and oral agents are a vital component of oral health care, offering antimicrobial, analgesic, remineralizing, and specific therapeutic benefits. Incorporating these pharmaceutical APIs into dental products helps individuals maintain optimal oral health and prevent dental problems.
